STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to motivate a struggling team member

Situation: One of our support workers was struggling with confidence when supporting a service user with challenging behaviours, leading to increased incidents. Task: I needed to rebuild their confidence while ensuring service user safety. Action: I arranged weekly one-to-one supervision sessions, paired them with our most experienced worker for shadowing, and provided specific training on de-escalation techniques. I also celebrated their small wins publicly in team meetings. Result: Within 4 weeks, incidents reduced by 60% and the worker became one of our most reliable team members, even volunteering to mentor new starters.
2Question

Describe how you've contributed to service development in a previous role

Situation: Our service was receiving feedback that activities weren't meeting diverse interests of our 15 service users with Learning Disabilities. Task: I was asked to review and improve our weekly activity programme. Action: I conducted individual consultations with each service user, researched community resources, and proposed a new person-centred activity schedule including art therapy, gardening club, and cooking sessions. I presented the proposal to management with costings and secured £800 budget. Result: Service user engagement increased by 40%, we received 3 compliments from families, and the model was rolled out to 2 other services in the region.
