1Question

Tell me about a time you had to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders

During a critical integration testing phase, I discovered that data synchronisation between our CRM and billing system was failing for 15% of customer records. The issue was complex, involving API timeout configurations and database indexing problems. I needed to explain this to the programme director who had no technical background but needed to understand the business impact. I prepared a simple visual diagram showing the data flow and used an analogy of a busy restaurant where orders were getting lost between the kitchen and serving staff. I quantified the impact: 2,400 customer records affected, potential £180,000 revenue at risk, and 3-week delay if not resolved immediately. This approach helped secure additional developer resources within 24 hours, and we resolved the issue in 5 days rather than the projected 3 weeks.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a critical defect late in the testing cycle. How did you handle it?

Two days before go-live on a major system integration, I discovered that our payment processing interface was incorrectly handling currency conversion for international transactions. During final regression testing, I noticed discrepancies in the test data that others had missed. The defect affected 8% of transactions but could result in significant financial losses. I immediately escalated to the test lead and programme manager, documenting the exact scenarios and financial impact. I worked with the development team through the weekend to identify the root cause in the currency lookup service. We implemented a hotfix and I designed 25 additional test cases to verify the solution. Although this delayed go-live by 4 days, we prevented potential losses of £50,000 per month and maintained stakeholder confidence in our testing process.
