1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a SEND pupil overcome a challenge

A 9-year-old pupil with autism was struggling with transitions between activities, often becoming distressed and disrupting the class. I recognised this as a common challenge and worked with the class teacher to implement a visual timetable system. I created personalised picture cards showing each activity and gave the pupil 5-minute warnings before transitions. Within 3 weeks, the pupil was managing transitions independently 85% of the time, and their overall classroom engagement improved significantly. The strategy was so successful that we implemented it for 4 other pupils with similar needs.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to support a child's needs

During a science lesson, a pupil with ADHD became overwhelmed by the noise and activity of a group experiment. I quickly recognised the signs of sensory overload and calmly guided them to our designated quiet corner. I adapted the experiment by creating a simplified, individual version using the same materials but with fewer steps. This allowed the pupil to participate meaningfully while managing their sensory needs. The pupil completed the task successfully and rejoined the group for the conclusion, maintaining their confidence and inclusion in the lesson.
