Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a relationship with a challenging pupil

I worked with a 9-year-old pupil with severe ASC who was non-verbal and displayed challenging behaviours when overwhelmed. Initially, he would have meltdowns lasting 45 minutes when routines changed. I observed his interests and noticed he was fascinated by trains. I created a visual timetable using train imagery and introduced train-themed activities during transitions. Over 8 weeks, I gradually built trust by consistently using his preferred communication methods. The breakthrough came when he began using picture cards to communicate his needs. By term end, his meltdowns reduced to 10 minutes and occurred 70% less frequently, significantly improving his learning experience.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to show initiative in supporting a SEND pupil

A pupil with PMLD was struggling to engage during literacy sessions, often becoming distressed and withdrawing. The standard approaches weren't working, so I researched sensory learning techniques and proposed incorporating tactile elements. I created textured story boards and introduced multi-sensory props without additional budget by repurposing classroom materials. I piloted this approach over 4 weeks, documenting the pupil's responses. The results showed 85% increased engagement time and reduced distress behaviours. The teaching team adopted my approach school-wide, and it became part of our standard PMLD support toolkit, benefiting 15 other pupils with similar needs.
