STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you successfully managed challenging behaviour

A Year 9 student with SEMH was having daily meltdowns during maths lessons, disrupting the class of 12 students. I observed his triggers were related to frustration with number work. I developed a visual prompt system and introduced 5-minute movement breaks every 15 minutes. I also created a calm-down space in the corner with sensory tools. Within 3 weeks, his meltdowns reduced from daily occurrences to once per week, and his engagement with maths activities increased by 60%. The teacher reported improved classroom atmosphere for all students.
2Question

How do you remain patient when working with students who have complex needs?

When supporting a Year 8 student with PMLD who required 20 minutes to complete a simple matching task, I reminded myself that every small step was progress. I broke down activities into 3-minute segments and celebrated micro-achievements like making eye contact or holding a pencil. I maintained detailed progress logs showing incremental improvements over 6 weeks. This helped me see that what seemed like slow progress was actually significant development for this student. My patience was rewarded when he eventually completed the task independently after 8 weeks of consistent support.
