1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a disengaged pupil re-engage with learning

I worked with a Year 9 pupil with SEMH needs who had been refusing to participate in lessons for 3 weeks. I observed that he responded well to hands-on activities, so I redesigned my English lessons to include drama and creative writing workshops. I started with 10-minute sessions focused on his interests in gaming and gradually extended these to full lessons. Within 6 weeks, his attendance improved from 40% to 85%, and he completed his first piece of coursework in over a year. The key was building trust through his interests and celebrating small wins to rebuild his confidence in learning.
2Question

Describe a challenging behaviour situation and how you managed it

A pupil with ASD became extremely distressed during a fire drill, leading to aggressive behaviour towards peers. I immediately implemented our de-escalation protocol, moving him to our designated calm space while ensuring other pupils' safety. I used his visual communication cards to help him express his feelings and provided sensory tools to help him regulate. I then worked with our SENCO to create a personalised fire drill plan with advance warning and a buddy system. This prevented similar incidents and the pupil successfully participated in subsequent drills without distress.
