STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a challenging behaviour situation in the classroom and what the outcome was.

Situation: During a Year 9 Science lesson at my previous school, one pupil repeatedly disrupted practical work, putting the safety of 28 students at risk. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly without halting the lesson for the rest of the class. Action: I calmly redirected the pupil to a written observation task at a separate bench, used the school's staged behaviour protocol, and followed up with a brief restorative conversation at the end of the lesson. I also logged the incident and informed the form tutor. Result: The pupil's behaviour improved markedly over the following three weeks, and there were no further safety incidents during practicals that term. The form tutor later noted the restorative approach had positively influenced the pupil's wider conduct.
2Question

Describe how you have adapted your teaching style to suit a new school's culture or expectations.

Situation: When I joined a Derby secondary school on a long-term supply placement mid-year, the department used a markedly different assessment framework from my previous school. Task: I had to align my marking and feedback style to their whole-school policy within the first two weeks. Action: I reviewed the school's assessment handbook, observed two lessons from a permanent colleague, and restructured my written feedback templates to match the school's three-part model. I also attended a staff briefing on their literacy-across-the-curriculum initiative. Result: My end-of-half-term book scrutiny received positive feedback from the Head of Science, and my class's average assessment score rose from 61% to 74% over six weeks.
