STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to influence a difficult customer to make a purchase decision

Situation: A pub chain manager was resistant to stocking our premium soft drinks range, citing limited fridge space and customer preference concerns. Task: I needed to secure a 3-month trial placement worth £1,200 monthly revenue. Action: I analysed their customer demographics using iPad data tools, presented fact-based evidence showing 68% preference for premium options in similar venues, and offered flexible point of sale solutions including a compact display unit. I also arranged a customer tasting session during peak hours. Result: The manager agreed to the trial, which generated £1,450 in first-month sales, leading to a permanent listing across their 8 locations.
2Question

Describe how you've used fact-based conversations to drive sales results with challenging customers

Situation: An independent convenience store owner was considering dropping our product line due to perceived slow movement and competitor pressure. Task: I needed to retain this £180 monthly account and demonstrate value proposition. Action: Using iPhone analytics, I compiled 6 months of sales data showing their soft drinks category grew 15% with our products versus 3% industry average. I presented this alongside customer footfall patterns and suggested optimal shelf positioning during their quieter Tuesday morning slot. I also negotiated improved payment terms. Result: They not only retained our full range but increased their monthly order to £220, and referred 2 neighbouring stores who became new customers worth £320 combined monthly revenue.
