1Question

Describe a time you helped a PMLD student achieve a meaningful outcome

I worked with Sarah, a 19-year-old student with profound learning disabilities who struggled with basic communication. I designed a personalised programme using Makaton signs and visual aids over 8 months. I broke down communication goals into weekly targets, working with her support worker daily. Sarah progressed from no verbal communication to using 15 Makaton signs consistently. By the end of the programme, she could express basic needs independently, which significantly improved her quality of life and reduced frustration-related behaviours by 70%.
2Question

How do you handle challenging behaviour in the classroom?

When working with James, a student with autism who displayed aggressive outbursts during transitions, I implemented a structured approach. I analysed triggers over 2 weeks and identified that sudden changes caused distress. I introduced visual timetables and 5-minute warning signals before transitions. I worked with the behaviour support team to create a consistent response plan. Within 6 weeks, aggressive incidents reduced from daily occurrences to once per week, and James became more confident navigating classroom activities.
