1Question

Tell me about a time you had to coach a manager through a difficult ER situation

A department head at my previous NHS Trust was struggling with a complex capability case involving a 15-year employee. The manager was avoiding difficult conversations and the situation was escalating. I arranged weekly coaching sessions, providing structured guidance on performance management frameworks and helping them prepare for each meeting. I role-played difficult scenarios and provided template documentation. Over 8 weeks, the manager gained confidence to address the issues directly. The case was resolved through a supported improvement plan, with the employee's performance returning to acceptable standards and the manager developing skills they later applied to prevent similar issues.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build credibility quickly with new stakeholders

Starting as interim People Partner at a local authority during a major restructure, I needed to gain trust from 6 service heads who were sceptical about external consultants. I spent my first week conducting one-to-one meetings, listening to their concerns about the change process and identifying quick wins. I immediately resolved 3 outstanding ER queries that had been delayed for months and provided clear timelines for the restructure consultation. Within 4 weeks, I had established regular communication channels and was being invited to strategic planning meetings. The service heads later requested my contract be extended due to the collaborative relationship we'd built.
