1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build credibility with a skeptical manager

When I joined my previous role, the Operations Manager was resistant to HR involvement, viewing it as bureaucratic interference. I scheduled a one-to-one meeting to understand his concerns about a underperforming team member. Rather than imposing processes, I listened to his operational challenges and proposed a tailored performance improvement plan that aligned with his production targets. I provided weekly check-ins and practical coaching tools he could use immediately. Within 6 weeks, the employee's performance improved by 35%, and the manager began proactively seeking HR guidance. This approach transformed our relationship and led to him becoming one of HR's strongest advocates across the 45-person operations team.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance employee needs with business requirements

During a restructure affecting 25 field engineers, several employees requested extended notice periods due to family commitments, while the business needed swift implementation to meet client deadlines. I developed a phased transition plan that offered voluntary early retirement packages to 3 eligible employees and negotiated flexible start dates for affected roles. I also arranged skills transfer sessions between departing and remaining staff. This approach reduced redundancy costs by £18,000, maintained client service levels throughout the 8-week transition, and achieved 92% employee satisfaction scores in our exit surveys. The solution demonstrated that employee welfare and business needs could be successfully aligned with creative problem-solving.
