1Question

Tell me about a time you contributed to raising student achievement in a PE or sports context — what was your specific role?

Situation: In my second year of teaching, our Year 11 GCSE PE cohort of 28 students was on track for a 54% pass rate — well below the department target of 70%. Task: As the lead teacher for that group, I needed to identify gaps and implement a targeted intervention before the final assessments. Action: I introduced weekly after-school revision sessions focused on the written component, created a structured practical assessment calendar, and paired lower-attaining students with Year 12 sports leaders for peer coaching. Result: By the end of the academic year, 76% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE PE, exceeding the department target and representing the cohort's best result in four years.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a safeguarding concern involving a student. How did you handle it?

Situation: During a Year 9 PE lesson, a student made an offhand comment suggesting she was not eating properly and had been told by a family member to lose weight quickly. Task: As the teacher present, I had a duty to take this seriously and follow the school's safeguarding protocol without alarming the student. Action: I calmly concluded the lesson, then immediately documented the exact words used and reported the concern to the Designated Safeguarding Lead within the same school day. I did not investigate further or discuss it with other staff. Result: The DSL confirmed the referral was handled correctly, a welfare check was initiated, and the student was subsequently supported by the school's pastoral team. The situation reinforced the importance of acting promptly and within established procedures.
