Our clients are a UK fertiliser manufacturing and spreading business seeking an Operations Manager.

This is a hands-on field-based role operating a tractor and trailed disc fertiliser spreader, requiring accuracy, reliability, and strong machinery awareness. You will be working independently across a range of farms during peak spreading seasons.

We are looking for someone highly competent with agricultural machinery — not necessarily fertiliser spreading-specific, but someone who is confident operating large scale equipment in a professional farming or contracting environment.

Key Responsibilities

· Operate tractor and trailed disc fertiliser spreader safely and efficiently

· Apply fertiliser accurately according to set application rates

· Manually set and adjust spreader rates and settings

· Carry out daily calibration checks before work begins

· Ensure even, precise application with no over/under application

· Conduct routine maintenance and keep machinery in good working order

· Identify and resolve minor mechanical issues to avoid breakdowns

· Work across multiple farms and customer sites

· Maintain high standards of safety and professionalism in the field

What We’re Looking For

· Highly experienced tractor operator (essential)

· Confident operating large agricultural machinery independently

· Strong mechanical awareness and ability to maintain equipment

· Reliable, detail-focused, and able to work to precise application targets

· Comfortable working long hours during peak seasonal periods

Desirable (not essential):

· Fertiliser spreading experience

· Agricultural contracting background

· Experience with GPS or modern spreading systems (if applicable in future)

Working Pattern

· Seasonal peaks (spring and autumn) with longer hours

· Quieter periods outside peak seasons

· Field-based role across customer farms

What Our Client Offers

· Overtime during busy seasons

· Stable long-term position in a growing fertiliser business

· Modern equipment and support from an established team

· Opportunity to become a key operator within the company

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to work independently across multiple farm sites

During spring spreading season, I managed operations across 8 different farms spanning 45 miles. I planned daily routes to maximise efficiency, starting at the furthest site and working back towards base. When weather conditions changed unexpectedly, I had to quickly reassess priorities and communicate with 3 farm managers about rescheduling. I maintained detailed records of application rates for each field and completed all sites within the 2-week weather window, achieving 100% customer satisfaction scores.
2Question

Describe a situation where attention to detail was critical in your work

While calibrating a new fertiliser spreader, I noticed the application rate was reading 15% higher than specified. Rather than assuming it was correct, I double-checked the calibration using manual calculations and discovered a sensor fault. I immediately stopped work and recalibrated the entire system, preventing over-application across 200 hectares that would have cost £3,200 in wasted fertiliser and potential crop damage. This attention to detail saved both money and maintained our environmental compliance record.
