Dear Hiring Manager,

As a multiskilled engineer with my 18th Edition qualification and a background in electrically biased planned and reactive maintenance within food production environments, I was immediately drawn to this opportunity with your dairy distribution business in Stafford. The 4 on 4 off shift pattern and the focus on minimising downtime across processing and packaging machinery align closely with the work I find most rewarding.

My background in FMCG and food manufacturing maintenance has equipped me with hands-on experience diagnosing and resolving both electrical and mechanical faults under production pressure. I have consistently delivered structured PPM schedules that reduced unplanned stoppages across multiple production lines, and I am comfortable working autonomously across 12-hour shifts to keep critical machinery running safely and efficiently.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you minimised production downtime through a quick and effective maintenance intervention.

Situation: During a night shift at a dairy packaging facility, a critical filling machine tripped unexpectedly, halting one of three active production lines. Task: I needed to diagnose and restore the line within 30 minutes to avoid a £4,000 product loss. Action: I systematically isolated the fault to a failed contactor in the main control panel, sourced a replacement from the spares store and completed the repair in 22 minutes, documenting the fault in the CMMS for future PPM review. Result: The line restarted with 8 minutes to spare, the batch was completed on schedule, and I raised a PPM task that prevented two further failures over the following quarter.
2Question

Give an example of when you identified a recurring equipment fault and implemented a longer-term preventive solution.

Situation: A conveyor motor on a cream processing line was failing roughly every six weeks, each time causing around 90 minutes of unplanned downtime. Task: As the lead engineer on shift, I was responsible for both the reactive repairs and identifying a permanent fix. Action: I analysed the maintenance logs over four months, identified excessive vibration as the root cause and recommended realigning the drive shaft and upgrading the bearing specification. I also added a monthly vibration check to the PPM schedule. Result: The motor ran fault-free for over 11 months after the intervention, saving an estimated 9 hours of lost production time and reducing reactive callouts on that line by 40%.
