STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to adapt quickly to changing priorities or tasks

During a busy retail shift, our delivery schedule changed at short notice, requiring me to reorganise the entire stockroom layout within 2 hours. I quickly assessed the new priorities, created a revised plan, and coordinated with 3 team members to redistribute tasks. By breaking the work into 15-minute segments and maintaining clear communication, we completed the reorganisation 30 minutes ahead of the new delivery time. This experience taught me the importance of staying flexible and thinking systematically under pressure, skills I'd apply when store requirements change unexpectedly in merchandising.
2Question

Describe a situation where you built a positive working relationship with a difficult colleague or customer

I worked with a store supervisor who initially resisted changes to product placement, viewing external merchandisers as disruptive. I took time to understand their concerns about customer flow and staff efficiency. By proposing a trial period for new displays and sharing weekly sales data showing 22% improvement in our product category, I demonstrated the mutual benefits. Within 6 weeks, they became an advocate for our merchandising approach and even suggested additional opportunities. This experience showed me that building trust through data and respect for local expertise creates lasting partnerships.
