1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to resolve a commercial dispute on an M&E project

During a £12M hospital mechanical installation, our main M&E contractor claimed £180,000 for additional medical gas pipework not shown on original drawings. I analysed the JCT contract terms and discovered the work fell under provisional sums already allocated. I organised a three-way meeting with the contractor, design team, and client, presenting detailed cost breakdowns and contract clauses. Through collaborative negotiation, we agreed on £95,000 settlement covering legitimate additional work only, saving the client £85,000 while maintaining positive contractor relationships for future project phases.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to lead a commercial team through a challenging project phase

When our £8M healthcare M&E project fell 6 weeks behind schedule due to design changes, I led my 3-person commercial team through accelerated final account preparations. I restructured our workflow, assigning each team member specific subcontractor packages while I handled main contractor negotiations. We implemented weekly progress reviews and created standardised variation templates. Despite the compressed timeline, we completed all commercial close-outs within 4 weeks, achieving 99.2% cost certainty and enabling the client to open the medical facility on the revised schedule.
