STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage competing priorities for multiple fee earners — how did you handle it?

Situation: I was supporting three fee earners simultaneously during a particularly busy probate period, with two urgent Wills required the same afternoon and a partner's client meeting needing preparation. Task: I needed to ensure all three deliverables were completed accurately and on time without compromising quality. Action: I triaged by deadline, communicated realistic timescales to each fee earner immediately, completed the two Wills using audio typing within 90 minutes, then prepared the meeting bundle. I also flagged a diary clash I spotted during the process. Result: All three tasks were delivered on time, the partner commended the bundle quality, and the diary clash was resolved before it caused any disruption.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified an error in a legal document before it was sent — what did you do?

Situation: While copy typing a client care letter for a residential conveyancing matter, I noticed the completion date referenced in the body of the letter did not match the date stated in the attached contract summary. Task: As the letter was due to be sent within the hour, I needed to act quickly and carefully. Action: I flagged the discrepancy directly to the fee earner with both versions highlighted, rather than amending it myself, to ensure the correct date was confirmed at source. Result: The fee earner confirmed the contract date was correct and the letter was updated before despatch. The partner later noted the catch during a team meeting as an example of good practice.
