1Question

Tell me about a time you helped someone build confidence through music or creativity

I worked with a 14-year-old student who had severe anxiety about performing in front of others. Initially, she would freeze up during music lessons and refuse to participate. I started by having one-to-one sessions where we explored different instruments privately. Over 8 weeks, I gradually introduced small audiences - first just me, then one friend, then her music class. I used breathing techniques from my performance training and created a supportive environment where mistakes were celebrated as learning opportunities. By the end of term, she performed a solo piece at the school concert to an audience of 200 parents, receiving a standing ovation and gaining tremendous confidence that carried into her other subjects.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach to support someone's individual needs

I was supporting a 10-year-old boy with ADHD who struggled to focus during traditional music lessons. Standard teaching methods weren't working - he would become disruptive after 5 minutes and distract other pupils. I researched his condition and discovered that movement-based learning could help. I adapted my approach to incorporate physical activity, using percussion instruments that allowed him to move around, and breaking lessons into 10-minute segments with movement breaks. I also created visual cues and used his interest in video game music to engage him. Within 3 weeks, his focus improved dramatically, and his behaviour issues decreased by 80%. His class teacher noticed improvements in other subjects too, showing how the adapted approach had broader benefits.
