STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to support a child's changing needs

During a classroom activity, a 9-year-old pupil with autism became overwhelmed by unexpected noise from construction work outside. I quickly recognised the signs of sensory overload and immediately moved the child to our designated quiet space. I used visual cues and deep breathing exercises we had practised, while communicating with the teacher to adjust the lesson plan. Within 8 minutes, the pupil had regulated and was able to rejoin the class with noise-cancelling headphones, completing 85% of the planned activities.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work as part of a team to support a pupil

A 7-year-old with PMLD required coordinated support between myself, the class teacher, and the speech therapist for feeding and communication. I worked closely with the speech therapist to learn specific positioning techniques and communication symbols, then supported the teacher by implementing these during snack time and group activities. Our collaborative approach resulted in the pupil achieving 3 new communication milestones over 6 weeks and improved nutritional intake by 40%.
