1Question

Tell me about a time you worked with a child from a disadvantaged background

I worked with a Year 4 pupil whose family faced housing instability, affecting his concentration and attendance. I recognised he needed consistent support and created a morning check-in routine where we reviewed his weekend and set daily goals. I also coordinated with the class teacher to ensure homework was completed during school hours when home wasn't suitable. Over 8 weeks, his attendance improved from 76% to 94%, and his maths assessment scores increased by 15 points, demonstrating how targeted emotional and academic support can make a significant difference.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to be particularly patient with a struggling pupil

A Year 5 student with dyslexia became increasingly frustrated during reading sessions, often refusing to participate after 10 minutes. I adapted my approach by breaking reading into 5-minute chunks with movement breaks, using coloured overlays, and celebrating small wins like reading 3 sentences fluently. I maintained calm encouragement even when he threw his book twice in one session. After 6 weeks of consistent patience and adapted strategies, he progressed from reading 20 words per minute to 45 words per minute and began volunteering to read aloud in class.
