STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a challenging sales target

Situation: My manager set a quarterly target of £45k, 20% higher than previous quarters due to market expansion. Task: I needed to identify new revenue streams while maintaining existing accounts. Action: I analysed customer buying patterns and discovered 60% of clients hadn't purchased complementary products. I created targeted upselling campaigns and scheduled follow-up calls with 40 key accounts. I also identified 15 dormant accounts and re-engaged them with personalised proposals. Result: I achieved £52k in sales, exceeding the target by 15% and securing 8 new long-term contracts worth £18k annually.
2Question

Describe a situation where you built a strong relationship with a difficult customer

Situation: A major trade customer was consistently late on payments and complained about product quality, threatening to switch suppliers. Task: I needed to rebuild trust while addressing their concerns professionally. Action: I scheduled weekly check-ins, personally inspected their last 5 orders, and discovered a pattern of damaged goods during delivery. I coordinated with logistics to change their delivery schedule and provided 10% discount on their next 3 orders as goodwill. Result: Payment delays reduced from 45 to 15 days average, complaints dropped by 80%, and they increased their monthly orders by £3,200 within 6 months.
