Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight your AAT qualification or study status prominently in your Personal Statement, as the advert lists it under 'Essential' requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your bookkeeping experience: e.g. 'Maintained ledgers for 15 SME clients, processing 200+ transactions monthly using Xero.'

3

🎯 Mention Xero by name in your skills section — the advert lists it as both a core tool and a desirable differentiator, so direct experience will stand out.

4

🌐 Reference any client-facing experience explicitly, even if brief, as the role targets a clear path to Client Manager and the advert flags client liaison as a key responsibility.

5

📋 Tailor your CV to show progression intent: note any ACCA or ACA study plans, as the advert specifically rewards ambition to pursue these qualifications.

Dear Hiring Manager,

The Junior Accountant position at the independent Ipswich practice advertised through Reed aligns precisely with where I want to take my accountancy career. Having developed hands-on experience in bookkeeping, VAT returns, and year-end accounts preparation — and currently progressing through my AAT studies — I am keen to build on this foundation within a firm that offers structured training and a clear route to Client Manager.

My background in accountancy practice has given me exposure to cloud-based tools including Xero, client liaison, and the preparation of working papers and corporation tax schedules. I have consistently managed multiple client files to tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and a high standard of documentation.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage multiple client deadlines simultaneously — how did you prioritise?

Situation: During the January self-assessment peak at my previous practice, I was responsible for 14 client files all due within the same three-week window. Task: I needed to ensure every return was filed accurately and on time without compromising quality. Action: I created a priority matrix ranking clients by complexity and data readiness, tackling straightforward returns first to build momentum, then dedicating focused blocks to the more complex cases. I flagged two clients who had not supplied documents by week one and escalated to the manager early. Result: All 14 returns were submitted before the 31 January deadline, with zero penalties raised and positive feedback from three clients who noted the proactive communication.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified an error in financial data. What did you do?

Situation: While reconciling a VAT return for a limited company client in Xero, I noticed the input tax figure was significantly higher than the prior quarter with no corresponding increase in purchases. Task: I needed to investigate before submitting to HMRC. Action: I traced the discrepancy to a duplicated supplier invoice that had been entered twice during a bank feed import. I corrected the entry, documented the amendment in the working papers, and informed the senior accountant before submission. I also flagged the bank feed import process to the manager as a recurring risk. Result: The corrected return saved the client an overpayment of £1,400 and the firm updated its review checklist to include a duplicate-invoice check for all VAT clients.
