1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully persuaded someone to try a new product or service. What was your approach?

During my university placement in a retail bank, I identified that a business customer was paying high transaction fees without using our invoice financing service. I researched their cash flow challenges, prepared a 10-minute presentation showing how invoice financing could reduce their working capital costs by approximately £1,200 annually, and scheduled a follow-up meeting with their finance director. I listened carefully to their concerns about implementation time and connected them with our onboarding team to streamline the process. They signed up within 3 weeks, and the relationship expanded to include two additional services over the following quarter. This taught me that consultative selling—understanding client needs before pitching—builds trust and drives genuine cross-sell success.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage conflicting priorities between existing clients and new business development.

In my final year project, I managed a small portfolio of 12 simulated client accounts while being tasked with pitching to 5 new prospects. Two existing clients raised urgent service issues on the same day I had scheduled three new business presentations. I immediately triaged the existing client issues by severity, resolved one quickly via email, and scheduled a detailed call with the other for the following morning—showing them I valued their business enough to give proper attention. I then attended two of the three new pitches as planned, rescheduling the third by 48 hours with a sincere explanation. All three prospects appreciated the transparency, and both existing clients felt heard. This experience showed me that honest communication and prioritisation based on client impact—not just urgency—builds stronger relationships than trying to do everything at once.
