Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's HGV Class 2 Driver position in Brighton is a strong match for my experience and the kind of local, customer-focused driving work I actively seek. With a valid Cat C / 18T licence and over two years of delivery driving behind me, I understand the importance of accurate paperwork, safe load management and representing an employer professionally at every customer premises.

My background in multi-drop delivery has given me a solid grounding in pre-use vehicle checks, tachograph compliance and building reliable relationships with regular customers — all areas highlighted in your advert. I have consistently achieved on-time delivery rates across varied shift patterns, including weekend working, and I am comfortable with the manual handling demands of loading and unloading stock.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery — what happened and how did you resolve it?

Situation: On a regular wholesale route, I arrived at a small independent retailer to find the owner frustrated because a previous driver had left a delivery in the wrong storage area, causing spoilage of chilled goods. Task: I needed to complete my own delivery correctly and rebuild the customer's confidence in the service. Action: I listened calmly without interrupting, apologised on behalf of the team, placed the new delivery exactly where the customer directed, and noted the preferred location on the delivery manifest for future drivers. I also flagged the issue to my depot manager the same afternoon. Result: The customer thanked me directly and requested I be assigned their route going forward. The depot updated the account notes, preventing the issue recurring.
2Question

Give an example of when you noticed a safety issue with your vehicle or load. What did you do?

Situation: During a morning pre-use check before a 20-stop delivery run, I noticed one of the rear tyres on my 18T vehicle was visibly underinflated and had a slow puncture. Task: I had a full load ready and a tight delivery window, but I knew driving with a compromised tyre was a safety and compliance risk. Action: I immediately reported the defect on the vehicle inspection sheet, informed the transport manager before leaving the yard, and refused to move the vehicle until the tyre was inspected by the on-site mechanic. The tyre was replaced within 40 minutes. Result: The delivery run departed 45 minutes late but was completed safely. The transport manager commended the decision, noting it prevented a potential blowout on a dual carriageway.
