1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to build trust with someone who was initially resistant to help

During my previous role, I worked with a 34-year-old service user who had been admitted following a crisis and was refusing all interaction with staff. The situation required patience as she had experienced trauma and felt vulnerable. I took action by spending 15 minutes each shift simply sitting nearby without pressuring conversation, offering consistent presence and respect for her boundaries. I also ensured her preferred meals were available and communicated through written notes when she felt unable to speak. After 8 days of this approach, she began to engage verbally and eventually participated in group therapy sessions. The result was that she completed her 6-week programme successfully and maintained contact with our aftercare services, demonstrating the importance of building trust at the service user's pace.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work collaboratively with family members during a difficult period

I supported a 28-year-old service user whose family were struggling to understand her bipolar diagnosis and felt overwhelmed by the situation. The task was to facilitate communication between the clinical team and her parents while respecting confidentiality boundaries. I arranged weekly family meetings with the consultant psychiatrist and provided educational materials about bipolar disorder. I also helped the family understand the therapy programme structure and how they could support recovery at home. During these 4 weeks of intensive family work, I coordinated with social workers and occupational therapists to ensure consistent messaging. The result was improved family relationships and a successful discharge plan, with the family reporting 90% confidence in supporting ongoing recovery compared to 30% initially.
