1Question

Tell me about a time you helped someone overcome a difficult challenge

A service user with autism was struggling to engage with community activities due to severe anxiety about crowds. I worked with them to identify their interests and discovered they loved gardening. I arranged one-to-one visits to the local garden centre during quiet morning hours, gradually building their confidence. Over 8 weeks, we progressed from 15-minute visits to 2-hour sessions where they chose plants for the residential garden. This approach helped them develop coping strategies and eventually join group gardening activities, significantly improving their wellbeing and social skills.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work flexibly to meet changing needs

During a staff shortage, I was asked to cover an overnight shift at short notice for a resident experiencing increased challenging behaviours. I quickly reviewed their care plan and spoke with the day team about recent triggers. The resident was agitated due to a routine change, so I adapted my approach by maintaining their preferred evening activities and using their communication cards. I stayed calm during two episodes of distress, using de-escalation techniques I'd learned. By morning, the resident was settled, and I provided detailed handover notes that helped the day team continue the supportive approach.
