Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Open your Personal Statement with direct experience working with children — the advert explicitly values school, childcare, sports coaching, or youth work backgrounds above formal qualifications.

2

📊 Quantify your experience with children where possible: "Supported 6 pupils with SEN in weekly 1:1 reading sessions over 2 academic terms" is far stronger than a vague description.

3

🎯 Highlight your DBS status prominently — note whether it is on the Update Service, as this speeds up placement with Teaching Personnel across Leeds schools.

4

🤝 Mention any safeguarding or child protection training you have completed, including dates, as the advert references DfE 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' compliance as a requirement.

5

🌐 Tailor your CV to reference primary-age children specifically — the role is in primary schools across Leeds, so any KS1 or KS2 context (even voluntary) should be named explicitly.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a positive relationship with a child or young person who was initially reluctant to engage.

Situation: During a holiday sports programme, I was assigned to support a 9-year-old boy who refused to join group activities and sat alone for the first two sessions. Task: My goal was to help him feel safe enough to participate without forcing the issue. Action: I spent five minutes each morning chatting with him about his interests — he loved football — and gradually introduced a one-to-one passing drill before inviting him to join a small group of three. I also briefed the lead coach so the whole team used a consistent, low-pressure approach. Result: By day four he was fully participating in group games, and his parent thanked us at the end of the week. He returned the following term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm and patient under pressure while working with children or young people.

Situation: While volunteering at an after-school club with 20 children aged 7–11, a fire alarm sounded during a craft activity involving scissors and glue. Task: I needed to evacuate 20 children quickly and safely while keeping them calm. Action: I used a clear, steady voice to give a single instruction, assigned two older children to help carry materials away from the table, and counted every child out by name as we exited. I stayed at the back of the line to ensure no one was left behind. Result: All 20 children were at the assembly point within 90 seconds. The supervising teacher noted it was the calmest evacuation the club had carried out.
