STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a pupil with challenging behaviour in a SEN setting

A 14-year-old pupil with PMLD was becoming distressed during morning routines, displaying self-injurious behaviour when transitioning between activities. I recognised this was likely due to sensory overload from the busy classroom environment. I worked with the occupational therapist to create a visual schedule using symbols and implemented a 5-minute quiet space routine before each transition. Over 3 weeks, the pupil's distressed episodes reduced from daily occurrences to just twice per week, and they began using the visual cues independently to self-regulate.
2Question

Describe how you've maintained dignity and respect when providing personal care

When supporting a 16-year-old pupil with complex physical needs during toileting, I always ensured privacy by using screens and explaining each step of the process, even though they had limited verbal communication. I maintained their dignity by involving them in choices where possible, such as selecting which clothing to wear after care, and always spoke to them respectfully throughout the process. I also worked with the physiotherapy team to ensure proper positioning techniques that promoted their comfort and independence. This approach helped build trust, and the pupil became more cooperative during care routines, reducing the time needed from 20 to 12 minutes.
