STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you handled highly confidential information

During a merger discussion at my previous company, I was tasked with coordinating meetings between our 3 Board members and external advisors worth £4.2M. The information was highly sensitive as it could affect share prices. I implemented a secure filing system, used encrypted emails, and ensured all physical documents were locked away each evening. I also created a confidential calendar system that showed meetings as 'blocked time' without revealing attendees. The merger completed successfully with no information leaks, and the CEO specifically praised my discretion throughout the 8-week process.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to prioritise multiple urgent requests

During our quarterly Board meeting week, I received simultaneous urgent requests: the CEO needed travel arrangements for a client emergency, the CFO required last-minute presentation changes, and the COO needed venue changes for 40 attendees. I assessed impact and urgency, delegating the venue coordination to facilities while personally handling the CEO's travel within 2 hours and supporting the CFO's presentation updates. I communicated clear timelines to each executive and delivered all requests successfully. This resulted in the CEO making his critical client meeting, saving a £180,000 contract.
