1Question

Tell me about a time you had to analyse a large amount of information to make a decision. What was your process?

Situation: In my previous role at a retail company, I was asked to review 12 months of customer returns data to identify patterns ahead of a policy review. Task: I needed to present a clear recommendation to the operations manager within one week. Action: I consolidated data from three separate spreadsheets, removed duplicate entries, and categorised returns by product type, reason code, and month. I then created a simple bar chart to highlight that 62% of returns came from two product categories. Result: My analysis led the team to update the product descriptions for those categories, which reduced the returns rate by 18% over the following quarter.
2Question

Describe a situation where your attention to detail prevented a significant error.

Situation: While supporting a finance team on a voluntary project, I was cross-checking invoice records against a payment ledger. Task: I needed to confirm that all 340 invoices for the quarter had been correctly logged. Action: I methodically compared each entry line by line and noticed that one supplier had been paid twice for the same invoice — a duplication worth £2,400. I flagged this immediately to the finance lead with supporting documentation. Result: The duplicate payment was reversed before the month-end close, saving the organisation £2,400 and preventing a discrepancy in the quarterly accounts.
