STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you provided excellent customer service in a challenging situation

A customer had ordered groceries for an elderly relative but provided the wrong address, leaving me unable to complete the delivery with 20 minutes left on my shift. Rather than returning the items, I contacted our customer service team who helped locate the correct address 3 miles away. I explained the situation to the customer and made the additional journey, ensuring the elderly gentleman received his essential groceries that evening. The customer later wrote to thank Tesco for going above and beyond, and I learned the importance of persistence in customer service.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently to solve a problem

During a particularly busy Saturday shift, my delivery van developed a warning light 15 minutes into my route with 12 deliveries remaining. I immediately contacted my manager and followed safety protocols by pulling over. While waiting for roadside assistance, I reorganised my remaining deliveries by priority, identifying 4 customers who had requested specific time slots. I contacted these customers to explain the delay and rearranged their deliveries for the following day. When the replacement van arrived 45 minutes later, I completed the remaining 8 deliveries efficiently, maintaining customer satisfaction despite the technical issue.
