Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every delivery is exactly the standard I want to uphold as a Customer Delivery Driver at your Newcastle Upon Tyne Extra store. With a clean UK driving licence and a background in customer-facing roles, I understand that home delivery is as much about positive interaction at the doorstep as it is about safe, on-time driving.

My background in delivery and customer service has equipped me to manage a full day's route independently, handle varied customer needs with patience, and complete thorough vehicle checks before every shift. In a previous role I consistently achieved on-time delivery across 20+ stops per shift while maintaining high customer satisfaction scores.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service under time pressure.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift at a logistics company, I had 24 deliveries scheduled but two road closures added 40 minutes to my route. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the customer time windows without a single failed attempt. Action: I quickly re-sequenced my remaining 14 stops using the sat-nav, contacted the depot to flag two customers likely to receive late deliveries, and drove the revised route efficiently. I greeted every customer warmly despite the pressure and apologised proactively to the two affected households. Result: All 24 deliveries were completed, only two arrived 10 minutes late, and I received a 5-star customer feedback rating for that shift.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change during your working day.

Situation: Midway through a delivery shift, my van developed a tyre warning light 12 miles from the depot with 8 deliveries remaining. Task: I had to ensure customer safety, protect the vehicle, and minimise disruption to the remaining schedule. Action: I pulled over safely, called the depot immediately, and while waiting for a replacement vehicle, I reorganised the remaining parcels in delivery order so the handover would be seamless. The replacement driver arrived within 25 minutes and completed the route using my sequencing notes. Result: Six of the eight remaining deliveries arrived within their original time windows, and the depot supervisor commended my calm handling of the situation.
