Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight a valid UK driving licence prominently at the top of your CV — the advert's core requirement is driving, so this must be immediately visible to the hiring manager.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ home deliveries per shift across a 40-mile radius with a 99% on-time rate' to stand out from generic applications.

3

🌐 Emphasise any customer-facing experience in your work history — the advert stresses 'delivering great service, with a smile' and being 'the face of Tesco', so customer interaction skills are as important as driving.

4

🎯 Mention experience with flexible or shift-based rotas in your personal statement, as the role requires availability across specific evening windows six days a week.

5

🤝 Reference any experience working independently on the road while remaining accountable to a base team — the advert specifically describes feeling 'like your own boss' while staying connected to managers.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every delivery is exactly what draws me to the Customer Delivery Driver role at the Gloucester Brck Extra store. With a strong background in customer-facing service and confident, safe van driving, I am well placed to represent Tesco professionally on the road and ensure every customer receives their order with care and a positive experience.

My background in delivery and customer service roles has equipped me with the ability to manage independent workloads efficiently — completing 20+ stops per shift while maintaining a high standard of service — alongside the flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and customer needs. I am comfortable operating handheld delivery devices, conducting pre-shift vehicle checks, and handling goods safely to minimise damage in transit.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service in a challenging situation.

Situation: During a busy Friday evening shift, I arrived at a customer's address to find the order contained a missing item flagged as substituted without notification. The customer was visibly frustrated as it was an item needed for a dinner party that evening. Task: I needed to resolve the issue quickly, maintain the customer's trust in the service, and keep my remaining 14 deliveries on schedule. Action: I apologised sincerely, contacted my base team immediately to log the missing item for a refund, and offered the customer the contact number for the customer care line. I also noted the issue on the delivery app for the store manager. Result: The customer thanked me for handling it calmly and left a 5-star rating for the delivery. I still completed my remaining route within the scheduled window.
2Question

Describe a time when you had to manage your own workload independently without direct supervision.

Situation: On a Saturday evening shift, my route planning app lost signal for approximately 40 minutes in a rural area outside Gloucester, leaving me without turn-by-turn navigation for 8 remaining deliveries. Task: I had to complete the deliveries on time using my own initiative, without being able to contact base easily. Action: I pulled over safely, used the printed delivery manifest to identify addresses, cross-referenced them with my phone's offline map, and re-sequenced the remaining stops in the most logical order to minimise backtracking. Result: I completed all 8 deliveries within 12 minutes of the original schedule and reported the connectivity issue to the store manager on return so it could be flagged to the tech team.
