Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every delivery is exactly the environment in which I thrive — which is why the Customer Delivery Driver role at the Gainsborough Superstore immediately caught my attention. I bring a clean UK driving licence, proven experience in customer-facing delivery work, and the physical stamina required for a hands-on, varied shift pattern across the advertised availability windows.

My background in delivery and customer service has equipped me with the ability to manage a full round of 50+ drops independently, navigate unfamiliar addresses efficiently, and represent an employer's brand positively at every doorstep. I am comfortable working unsupervised for extended periods while remaining accountable to a base team for support when needed.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered outstanding service to a customer who needed extra help.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local grocery firm, I arrived at an elderly customer's home who was visibly struggling to carry her bags inside. Task: My schedule had 8 more drops to complete within 90 minutes, but I recognised the customer needed assistance. Action: I carried all 6 bags to her kitchen, checked she was comfortable, and noted her preference for ground-floor placement on the delivery system for future drivers. I then adjusted my remaining route using the sat-nav to recover 12 minutes. Result: The customer called the depot to praise the visit, and my manager shared the feedback with the whole team. I completed all remaining drops on time.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage your time effectively to complete a high volume of tasks.

Situation: During a peak pre-Christmas period, my usual round of 45 drops was extended to 62 due to a colleague calling in sick. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the same 7-hour shift window. Action: I re-sequenced the route by postcode cluster rather than the default system order, cutting 18 miles of backtracking. I also batched doorstep interactions efficiently, keeping each stop to under 3 minutes unless the customer needed extra time. Result: I completed all 62 deliveries with 25 minutes to spare and received no missed-slot complaints, which was flagged positively in the weekly team briefing.
