STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to help a customer who needed extra assistance.

Situation: During a home delivery round in winter, I arrived at an elderly customer's address and noticed she was struggling to carry her bags from the doorstep to her kitchen. Task: My schedule had 6 more stops within the next 40 minutes, but leaving her without help felt wrong. Action: I carried all 8 bags through to her kitchen, checked she had everything she needed, and noted the stop in my handover log so the depot could flag her address for extra care on future rounds. Result: The customer called the store to compliment the service, and my supervisor shared the feedback with the whole team at the next briefing. I completed my remaining deliveries on time.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage your time independently to complete a large workload before a deadline.

Situation: A colleague called in sick 30 minutes before a Saturday shift, leaving 22 extra deliveries added to my existing round of 30 stops. Task: I needed to complete all 52 deliveries within the 4-hour customer time-window slots without any late arrivals. Action: I re-sequenced my route using the navigation system to cluster nearby addresses, skipped my usual mid-shift break, and contacted the depot to flag two addresses with access issues so they could call ahead. Result: I delivered 50 of the 52 orders on time; the remaining 2 were delayed by 12 minutes due to road closures, and both customers were pre-warned by the store. No complaints were logged.
