STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery

A customer was upset about a delayed delivery worth £800 that was critical for their business meeting. I listened to their concerns, acknowledged the inconvenience, and immediately contacted dispatch to prioritise their next delivery. I also provided them with direct tracking information and my contact details for updates. The customer received their package within 2 hours, and they later sent a commendation email praising the personal service. This taught me that taking ownership and providing clear communication can turn a negative situation into a positive customer experience.
2Question

How do you handle working under pressure to meet delivery deadlines?

During a particularly busy Christmas period, I had 120 deliveries scheduled across a 9-hour shift with traffic delays due to roadworks. I reorganised my route using GPS optimisation, grouped deliveries by postcode clusters, and communicated proactively with customers about revised time windows. I completed 115 deliveries that day, with the remaining 5 rescheduled for early next morning with customer agreement. This experience reinforced the importance of planning, flexibility, and clear communication when managing time-critical deliveries under pressure.
