1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to negotiate a challenging costs settlement

I was handling a complex commercial litigation matter where the opponent disputed 60% of our £45,000 costs claim. The case involved multiple expert witnesses and extensive disclosure. I carefully analysed their Points of Dispute and identified that they were challenging reasonable and proportionate costs. I prepared a detailed response highlighting comparable case law and market rates for similar work. During the negotiation call, I presented evidence of the complexity and justified each disputed item with reference to the CPR. Through persistent but professional negotiation over three rounds of discussions, I secured a settlement of £38,000, representing 84% of our original claim and saving the client significant detailed assessment costs.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to supervise junior team members

I was tasked with supervising two trainee costs draftsmen during a particularly busy period with 15 Bills of Costs due within three weeks. I created a structured training programme covering the fundamentals of costs drafting and allocated cases based on complexity. I implemented daily review sessions where I checked their work and provided feedback on technical accuracy and presentation. When one trainee struggled with Precedent H preparation, I provided additional one-to-one training and created templates to guide their work. By the deadline, both trainees had successfully completed their allocated cases with minimal revisions required, and feedback from partners was positive. The experience taught me the importance of clear communication and structured support in developing junior staff.
