STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to work independently under pressure

During a particularly busy clinic day, I was the only vascular sonographer available when three urgent carotid studies were requested within 2 hours. I prioritised the cases based on clinical urgency, performed comprehensive bilateral carotid assessments on each patient, and delivered detailed reports within 90 minutes. My independent decision-making ensured all patients received timely diagnostic results, with one case revealing 85% stenosis requiring immediate surgical consultation. The consultant praised my efficiency and diagnostic accuracy under pressure.
2Question

How do you maintain accuracy when working with high patient volumes?

When managing 25+ scans daily, I developed a systematic approach combining thorough preparation with quality checkpoints. I review each patient's clinical history beforehand, use standardised scanning protocols, and perform real-time image optimisation during each examination. I also implemented a brief quality review after each scan before moving to the next patient. This methodology maintained my diagnostic accuracy at 98% even during peak periods, with only 2 cases requiring repeat scanning over 6 months due to technical limitations rather than protocol errors.
