Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's café kitchens are known for their pace and customer focus — two things that have defined my career in hospitality. I am applying for the Café Chef role at your Preston store, and I am confident my hands-on experience in food preparation, food safety compliance, and high-volume kitchen operations makes me a strong fit for this position.

My background in busy café and hospitality environments has equipped me with the skills to deliver food to specification consistently, manage food storage in line with hygiene regulations, and reduce waste without compromising on quality or speed of service. I have also supported junior colleagues in developing their kitchen skills, helping to build a team culture where standards are understood and maintained by everyone on shift.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you maintained high food standards under significant pressure in a busy kitchen.

Situation: During a bank holiday weekend at a café where I worked, we were short-staffed with one chef calling in sick, leaving just two of us to cover a full service. Task: I needed to maintain food quality and hygiene standards while managing a queue of over 150 customers. Action: I reorganised the prep station, prioritised the core menu items, and briefed my colleague clearly on their responsibilities. I completed all food safety temperature checks without skipping steps, even under time pressure. Result: We completed the full service with no food safety incidents, received positive feedback from the duty manager, and reduced wait times to under 8 minutes per order by the end of the shift.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a better way of working in a kitchen and implemented it.

Situation: At my previous café role, I noticed that food waste at the end of each day was consistently high, averaging around 12% of daily stock. Task: I was asked by the kitchen manager to investigate and propose a solution. Action: I introduced a daily stock rotation checklist and adjusted our morning prep quantities based on the previous fortnight's sales data. I also ran a short briefing with the team to explain the new process and why it mattered. Result: Within six weeks, end-of-day food waste dropped by 18%, saving the café approximately £300 per month in ingredient costs, and the checklist was adopted permanently across the site.
