1Question

Tell me about a time you had to mentor a junior colleague through a challenging client issue

When a junior colleague struggled with a complex VAT Partial Exemption calculation for a £2.8M turnover client, I recognised this as a crucial learning opportunity. I sat with them to break down the calculation methodology step-by-step, explaining the de minimis rules and how to handle mixed supplies. Together we worked through the client's transactions, identifying exempt vs taxable supplies. I then supervised their completion of the quarterly return and client explanation letter. The result was not only an accurate VAT return saving the client £3,200 in potential penalties, but my colleague gained confidence to handle similar cases independently, successfully managing 12 Partial Exemption clients over the following year.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage multiple client deadlines simultaneously

During the January year-end rush, I had 15 clients with 31st January filing deadlines while also managing monthly management accounts for 8 ongoing clients. I created a priority matrix based on complexity and client importance, then blocked time in 3-hour focused sessions per client. I communicated proactively with each client about progress and any documentation needed. By working systematically and staying late twice that week, I successfully filed all 15 year-end accounts on time and delivered the monthly management accounts within 5 days of month-end. This earned praise from the partner and strengthened relationships with all clients involved, with 3 referring new business worth £18,000 in fees.
