STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to work flexibly to meet a client's needs

A client with a spinal injury needed urgent support when their regular carer called in sick on a Sunday evening. Despite it being my day off, I rearranged my plans and provided 8 hours of care including medication administration and personal care. I coordinated with the family and healthcare team to ensure continuity of care. The client remained stable and comfortable, and the family expressed gratitude for the seamless support. This reinforced my commitment to flexible, client-centred care.
2Question

Describe a situation where you provided emotional support to a distressed client

I supported a client with a recent brain injury who was struggling with depression about their reduced mobility. They were refusing physiotherapy and becoming withdrawn. I spent extra time listening to their concerns and gently encouraged small achievements like completing daily exercises. Over 3 weeks, I helped them set realistic goals and celebrated each milestone. Their mood improved significantly, and they re-engaged with their rehabilitation programme, achieving 80% attendance at physiotherapy sessions.
