1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new clinical environment

During an agency shift, I was allocated to a respiratory ward I'd never worked on before, with 20 minutes notice due to staff sickness. I immediately introduced myself to the ward sister and requested a brief handover on the 28 patients, focusing on high-dependency cases. I reviewed the ward protocols and familiarised myself with the medication trolley layout. Within 45 minutes, I was safely administering medications and had established rapport with 3 patients requiring complex respiratory care. By the end of the 12-hour shift, I had successfully managed my patient load without incident and received positive feedback from the permanent staff about my quick integration.
2Question

Describe how you maintain professional standards when working across different departments

When working agency shifts across 4 different wards last month, I developed a systematic approach to maintain consistency. I always arrived 15 minutes early to review ward-specific protocols and introduced myself to the nurse in charge. I carried a pocket reference card with key trust policies and ensured I followed each ward's documentation standards precisely. For example, on the cardiac unit, I adapted to their specific observation charts and medication timing requirements. This approach resulted in zero medication errors across 8 shifts and positive feedback from 3 different ward managers about my professionalism and attention to detail.
