STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to escalate concerns about a patient's deteriorating condition

During a night shift on our 20-bed medical ward, I noticed a 67-year-old patient showing subtle signs of respiratory distress with oxygen saturation dropping from 96% to 89% over 2 hours. I immediately increased oxygen therapy and conducted a full assessment, discovering decreased breath sounds and increased respiratory rate to 28. I escalated to the on-call registrar within 15 minutes, providing a structured SBAR handover. The patient was diagnosed with pneumonia and transferred to HDU, making a full recovery within 5 days. My early recognition and prompt escalation prevented potential respiratory failure.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

When caring for a 73-year-old diabetic patient with complex wound healing issues, I coordinated care between 5 different specialists including endocrinology, tissue viability, physiotherapy, dietetics, and pharmacy. I organised weekly MDT meetings, ensuring each discipline had current assessment data and care plan updates. By facilitating clear communication and shared decision-making, we reduced the patient's length of stay from projected 14 days to 9 days whilst achieving complete wound healing. The collaborative approach resulted in £3,200 cost savings and improved patient outcomes.
