STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult supplier relationship

Situation: Our main office supplies contractor was consistently delivering 3 days late, affecting 15 departments. Task: I needed to resolve this without disrupting service or breaking our £45k annual contract. Action: I arranged a face-to-face meeting to understand their logistics challenges, then negotiated a revised delivery schedule with buffer time and implemented weekly progress calls. I also identified a backup supplier for critical items. Result: Delivery performance improved to 98% on-time within 6 weeks, and we maintained the relationship whilst securing better terms for the following year.
2Question

Describe a situation where you delivered significant cost savings through procurement

Situation: Our cleaning services contract was up for renewal at £120k annually, with budget pressures requiring 10% reduction. Task: I needed to achieve savings without compromising service quality across 8 buildings. Action: I conducted a comprehensive market analysis, restructured the specification to focus on outcomes rather than inputs, and ran a competitive tender through a collaborative framework. I negotiated performance-based pricing with quarterly reviews. Result: Secured a new 3-year contract at £102k annually, delivering 15% savings worth £54k over the contract term whilst improving service KPIs by 12%.
