Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your QTS qualification prominently at the top of your CV under your Professional Qualifications section, as the advert lists it as the first essential requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your A Level teaching impact: e.g. '92% of A Level Maths students achieved grades A*–C over 3 consecutive years', as the college emphasises academic achievement and student progression.

3

🎯 Explicitly call out A Level Statistics experience in a dedicated 'Teaching Specialisms' section — the advert flags it as an ideal differentiator and it is less common than pure Maths delivery.

4

🌐 Highlight any experience in post-16 or sixth form settings specifically, as the role is within an outstanding sixth form college and familiarity with that environment is a clear advantage.

5

🤝 Include a brief Personal Statement referencing your approach to fostering independent learning, mirroring the college's stated culture of encouraging students to flourish.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a struggling A Level student turn their performance around before a key assessment.

Situation: A Year 13 student was consistently scoring below 40% in A Level Statistics mock papers three months before the final examination. Task: As her class teacher, I needed to identify the gaps and implement a targeted recovery plan without disrupting the rest of the group. Action: I scheduled four one-to-one sessions over six weeks focusing on hypothesis testing and probability distributions, the two topics where her marks were weakest. I created bespoke practice questions using real data sets she found engaging and set weekly mini-tests to track progress. Result: By the final mock in April she scored 68%, and in the summer examination she achieved a grade B, securing her place at the University of Manchester to study Economics.
2Question

Give an example of how you have fostered independent learning in a post-16 classroom.

Situation: My Year 12 A Level Mathematics class of 20 students was heavily reliant on teacher-led instruction and struggled to attempt problems without step-by-step guidance. Task: I wanted to build their confidence and self-sufficiency ahead of the more demanding Year 13 content. Action: I introduced a structured 'explore first' model where students tackled unseen problems in pairs for 15 minutes before any teacher input, supported by a one-page prompt sheet. I also set weekly independent problem sets via an online platform, reviewing completion rates every fortnight. Result: After one term, 85% of students were attempting extension questions unprompted, and the department's internal assessment average for that cohort rose from 61% to 74%.
