About the Role

We’re looking for a School Youth Support Worker to join a welcoming secondary school, supporting students aged 11–18. You’ll be working alongside the school’s Specialist Resource Base (SRB), supporting students with additional learning needs through a mix of mainstream access and specialist provision. The SRB supports learners with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Severe learning difficulties
  • Speech, language and communication needs

You’ll be part of a highly collaborative team. This is a genuinely nurturing and supportive school community — a fantastic place to make a lasting impact.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to remain calm and patient in a challenging situation with a young person

A 14-year-old student with ASD became overwhelmed during a busy lunch period and started having a meltdown in the corridor. Rather than rushing to intervene, I approached slowly and spoke in a calm, quiet voice. I guided them to a quiet space away from the noise and crowds. I used their preferred communication method - visual cards - to help them express their feelings. After 15 minutes, they were able to return to class. This incident taught me the importance of understanding individual triggers and having personalised de-escalation strategies ready.
2Question

Describe a situation where you helped a student overcome a significant barrier to their learning

I worked with a 16-year-old student who had severe anxiety about speaking in class due to speech difficulties. This was preventing them from participating in discussions and presentations. I developed a graduated exposure plan, starting with one-to-one conversations, then small group work with trusted peers. We practised using visual aids and alternative communication methods. Over 3 months, their confidence grew significantly. They eventually delivered a 5-minute presentation to the whole class, achieving their personal learning goal and boosting their self-esteem considerably.
