1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a challenging student with additional needs

I worked with a 14-year-old pupil with ASD who frequently became overwhelmed during group activities. I noticed he responded well to visual cues, so I created a traffic light system - green for calm, amber for needing space, red for break time. I implemented 5-minute check-ins every lesson and established a quiet corner with sensory tools. Over 8 weeks, his meltdowns reduced from daily occurrences to just twice per week, and his participation in group work increased by 70%. The strategy was so successful that 3 other teaching assistants adopted similar approaches.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm under pressure with SEN pupils

During a fire drill, one of my pupils with severe anxiety began having a panic attack while 200 students were evacuating. Rather than rushing, I stayed with him using breathing techniques we'd practised - counting to 4 for inhale, hold for 4, exhale for 6. I spoke in a calm, low voice and used his preferred fidget toy to ground him. Within 3 minutes, he was able to walk to the assembly point. The headteacher later commended my approach, and we incorporated this technique into his individual behaviour plan for future emergency situations.
