STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child overcome a learning challenge

I worked with a 6-year-old in Year 2 who struggled with reading comprehension and would become frustrated during literacy lessons. I collaborated with the SENCO to break down reading tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and introduced visual story maps. Over 8 weeks, I provided daily 20-minute 1:1 sessions using these adapted materials. The child's reading confidence improved dramatically - they progressed from refusing to read aloud to volunteering to read to the class. Their comprehension scores increased by 40% and behavioural incidents during literacy dropped to zero.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach for a child's specific needs

I supported a Year 1 pupil with sensory processing difficulties who found the classroom environment overwhelming. Initially, I tried standard calming techniques, but they weren't effective. I observed that the child responded well to deep pressure activities, so I worked with the occupational therapist to create a sensory toolkit including weighted lap pads and fidget tools. I also established a quiet corner with noise-cancelling headphones. Within 3 weeks, the child's time spent in class increased from 2 hours to 5 hours daily, and their participation in group activities improved by 60%.
