STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped an SEN student overcome a significant learning challenge

Situation: I had a Year 9 student with dyslexia who was struggling with written English assessments and becoming increasingly frustrated. Task: I needed to find alternative ways for him to demonstrate his understanding while building his confidence. Action: I introduced voice recording software for his responses and created visual mind maps to help structure his thoughts. I also worked with his teaching assistant to develop a step-by-step writing framework. Result: Within 8 weeks, his assessment scores improved by 60% and his confidence grew significantly. He began volunteering answers in class discussions and his parents reported improved homework completion at home.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your teaching approach mid-lesson for an SEN student

Situation: During a KS4 Science lesson about chemical reactions, I noticed one student with ADHD was becoming restless and disruptive, affecting the whole class. Task: I needed to re-engage him while maintaining the lesson flow for other students. Action: I quickly adapted the demonstration into a hands-on experiment where he could be my assistant, giving him a specific role measuring chemicals. I also introduced movement breaks every 10 minutes for the remaining lesson. Result: His engagement increased immediately and he successfully completed the practical assessment. The class remained focused and 95% achieved the lesson objectives. I implemented this approach in future lessons with excellent results.
