STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult parent or visitor at reception

A parent arrived upset about their child's detention, demanding immediate access to the headteacher. I remained calm and acknowledged their concerns, explaining our visitor policy while offering to book an urgent appointment. I contacted the deputy head who was available within 15 minutes. I provided the parent with a quiet waiting area and offered refreshments. The situation was resolved professionally, and the parent later thanked me for my patience and understanding. This approach maintained school security protocols while ensuring the parent felt heard and supported.
2Question

Describe how you've managed competing priorities in a school environment

During exam week, I had to process 200 reprographics requests, update attendance for 3 year groups in SIMS, and cover reception duties. I created a priority matrix, handling urgent exam papers first, then batching SIMS updates during quieter reception periods. I coordinated with teaching assistants to help with non-confidential printing tasks. By 4pm, all exam papers were ready, attendance was current, and no visitors had waited longer than 5 minutes. This systematic approach ensured critical deadlines were met without compromising service quality.
